The Manifestation of the Darkness of God’s Presence
- Daniel & Tina Glimm
- PROPHETIC CHAMBER
In Psalm 18:10-13, we learn that the feet of the LORD – YAHWEH, our God rest in darkness, and that He makes darkness His tent all around, and is hidden in thick, dark clouds.
Psalm 18:9-11:
9 He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet.
10 He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him – the dark rain clouds of the sky.
Since this darkness accompanies the presence of the LORD, it has a positive character, comparable in a prophetic context to the blackness of the pupil of the eye. This also refers to recognizing the high ways of God according to Isaiah 55:8-9.
Isaiah 55:8-9:
8 ‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the Lord.
9 ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
And it is God, who is Spirit, to whom the realm of the atmosphere in the form of darkness and His descent serves as an indication. Jesus’ statement is preceded by a call to worship the Father (cf. John 4:24a i.c.w. John 4:23).
John 4,24a:
24a God is spirit, …
John 4:23:
23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks.
The Hebrew word for ‘Father – `āḇ’ and the Hebrew word for ‘dark cloud – `āḇ’ are phonetically identical, but they have different Hebrew initial letters, namely ‘Aleph – א’ and ‘Ayin – ﬠ’.
The Darkness and the Presence of the Heavenly Father
In this context, these two letters refer to visual acuity, in which the eye and the pupil play an important role. It is darkness that played a significant role at the beginning of creation, when darkness covered the deep, and was transformed when God gave it the ‘identity’ of evening through the presence of light, so that a new day could begin (cf. Genesis 1:2-4).
Genesis 1:2-4:
2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.
4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.
The light spoken of by God (Note: Hebrew אוֹר – 'ôr) is the original source of light (Note: not only the light we know in nature corresponds to this) that comes from the God of lights and only from Him alone (cf. James 1:17).
James 1:17:
17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
This light also encompasses joy.
(Note: part excerpt from the Elberfelder Study Bible on the word ‘'ôr’ with the keyword number 220)
The Correlation Between of Darkness and Light
In this context, we can see a correlation between the darkness in Egypt during the ninth plague and the bright light in Goshen, where the people of Israel were staying. The darkness did not cause any tangible damage, but it prevented the Egyptians from seeing their surroundings and recognizing the objects and creation around them (cf. Exodus 10:22-23).
Exodus 10:22-23:
22 So Moses stretched out his hand towards the sky, and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days.
23 No-one could see anyone else or move about for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived.
It often happens in life that we do not properly recognize the things God does because we lack spiritual vision, which is the eyes of the heart. Our eyes are not the part through which we see, but rather light enters our inner being through our eyes so that we can process it as impulses in images into thoughts, which we generally call ‘seeing’. It is a complex and exciting process that the Father has given us with a right and left eye in our face, provided we have our eyesight, but which only fully opens up to us in a spiritual sense.
For this reason, it is important for us as disciples to ask for the spirit of wisdom and revelation so that we may be able to see with the enlightened eyes of our hearts. We ask Him for this so that we may bring light into the darkness, to recognize what God has prepared and what is in accordance with His will (cf. Ephesians 1:17-18).
Ephesians 1:17-18:
17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.
18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, …
Since, according to Luke 12:34a, the eye is the light of the body, when we move forward in the holiness of God, it becomes clear that the darkness in the place where we are will be illuminated, so that the things prepared by God become visible. In this way, we fulfil Jesus’ command that we are the light of the world (cf. Luke 12:34a: i.c.w. Matthew 5:14).
Luke 12:34a:
34a Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy [Note: generous], your whole body also is full of light. …
Matthew 5:14:
14 ‘You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
It is God the Father who has surrounded us with blessings intended to enrich our lives. However, if we move forward without the wisdom and knowledge He has given us, the things that are meant to enrich us appear to be obstacles because we cannot see them.
As God’s people, we are called to act in faith based on the truth of God’s Word. This represents the light, so that the vision that the Heavenly Father has prepared in His eternal plan may come forth (cf. Hebrews 11:1 i.c.w. James 2:17).
Hebrews 11:1:
1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
James 2:17:
17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
May the light shine from the pupils of our eyes of the heart and illuminate our surroundings with the revelatory truth, so that what the Father has prepared may be seen (cf. Psalm 119:105 i.c.w. Proverbs 6:23a).
Psalm 119:105:
105 Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
Proverbs 6:23a:
23a For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, …
Thanks to His revealing light within us through the truth of His Word, we are enabled to recognize God’s blessings and help others to recognize His blessings without feeling like they are obstacles in the way that cause us to stumble.
The Revelatory Light from God and the Truth of His Word
We need to apply the prophetic anointing through the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the power of faith, so that the light of the LORD may shine through us (cf. Revelation 3:18 i.c.w. Romans 12:6b; 2 Peter 1:19-21).
Revelation 3:18:
18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so that you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so that you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so that you can see.
Romans 12:6b:
… 6b If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; …
2 Peter 1:19-21:
19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things.
21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
This makes it all the more important for the saints in the body of Christ to pray that together we may recognize the new things God is doing and the opportunities to let go of the past or old things that have not yet been renewed. Only in this way will we be able to move forward in greater unity, which is formed by the prophetic Spirit of God and not by human strength, in the harvest work of this time.
Amen and Amen.
